Benefits Upon Death

Information furnished by Rick Schluderberg

Let me visit a subject about something that will effect us all, hopefully later instead of sooner – death benefits. The recent tragedy of  9-11 certainly made one realize that death can come to anyone at anytime.  With the loss of loved ones, there is always uncertainty for the survivors. They have questions about finances, health care, and their future. Most of the time the family has no one but the union to turn to for help. The information contained in this site is only intended to make the family aware of the benefits available to them and how they can assist us by having the personal information required to process the claim handy.  I hope no one has to use this information for a long time, but please put it somewhere safe and let others know were it is.

I believe there are three possible scenarios, each with a different level of benefits to the survivors.

LINE OF DUTY          NON-LINE OF DUTY RETIREE

Some thing you should remember:

  • A certified copy of the death certificate will be required to process most of the benefit claims.
  • It easier for the funeral director to obtain sufficient copies for you at the time of service. (I would get a least 15-20)
  • Have the social security numbers for all family members, as well as dates of birth, marriage, etc available
  • Let a responsible family member know where important papers are.
  • If you have any questions, call the Union Office.
